Homogeneous vs heterogeneous vinyl flooring: how to specify the right one

Two families of sheet vinyl that look alike on the surface and differ in everything underneath. If the project is a hospital, a school or a retail space, the decision comes down to four figures on the datasheet: wear layer, dimensional stability, TVOC emission and how the welded joint behaves.

What sheet vinyl actually is

Sheet vinyl is manufactured in 2 m widths and installed with heat-welded seams, so the finished floor is continuous, with no grooves for dirt to collect. That continuity is why healthcare specifies sheet over tile formats: in a hospital, every open seam is both an infection point and a failure point under the constant traffic of trolleys and beds.

Within that format there are two distinct constructions: homogeneous and heterogeneous. They are sold under the same category and rarely compared side by side, yet the selection criterion is not “the better one” but “the one that survives the use we are going to give it”.

Homogeneous: the same mix top to bottom

Homogeneous vinyl is a single mass of PVC with mineral filler and pigment, uniform through its entire thickness. There is no printed layer and no applied wear film: what wears down on the surface is the same formula as at mid-depth.

  • Total thickness of 2.0 to 3.0 mm: here the thickness is the wear layer.
  • Can be buffed and surface-rehabilitated several times across its service life.
  • High tolerance to hospital-grade disinfectants and to point loads.
  • Solid colour and uniform grain: less decorative variety, more resistance.

Heterogeneous: layers with distinct jobs

Heterogeneous vinyl is built in layers: a PVC backing, a fibreglass reinforcement that provides stability, a printed layer that carries the design, and a clear wear film protecting that print. The print can reproduce wood, stone or a client-specific design.

Rule of thumb: in heterogeneous the service life is set by the wear layer; in homogeneous it is set by the total thickness. That is the figure that decides the purchase — and the one most often missing from tender documents.

How to choose by environment

  • Operating theatres, ICU and laboratories: homogeneous. The floor sees disinfectant daily and point loads from equipment, and it can be rehabilitated instead of replaced.
  • Wards and outpatient clinics: either one, depending on budget and the building's expected service life.
  • Schools, universities and covered sports halls: heterogeneous with a 0.70mm wear layer, which absorbs a generation of school traffic without replacement.
  • Retail, offices and hospitality: heterogeneous at 0.35mm to 0.50mm, where design leads and mechanical aggression does not.
  • Areas with sensitive electronic equipment (imaging rooms, data centres): conductive or anti-static variants, specified by electrical resistance rather than by design.

Frequently asked questions

What wear layer do I need for a hospital?

In critical areas (operating theatre, ICU, laboratory) homogeneous 2.0 to 2.5 mm is specified, where the full thickness acts as the wear layer. In circulation routes and wards, a heterogeneous with a 0.70mm wear layer performs without issue.

Is homogeneous vinyl always better than heterogeneous?

No. It is tougher and renewable, but it costs more per square metre and offers less design variety. In a school or a retail unit, paying for homogeneous where a 0.70mm heterogeneous would do is over-specifying the project.

How long does sheet vinyl last?

It depends on traffic and maintenance. As a project reference: 15 to 20 years for hospital-grade homogeneous with periodic rehabilitation, and 10 to 15 years for 0.70mm heterogeneous under heavy traffic. The dimensional stability of the substrate matters as much as the product.
